Building VTK5 with Visual Studio

Download

  1. Download VTK 5.10.1 the (VTK-5.10.1.zip) to unzip the file. (C: \ VTK-5.10.1)Http://Www.Vtk.Org/VTK/resources/software.Html#previous

CMake

  1. You want to specify the destination of the input destination and solution files of source code.
    • Where is the source code: C:\VTK-5.10.1
    • Where is build the binaries: C:\VTK-5.10.1\build
  2. Press the [Configure] to select the Visual Studio that is the target.
  3. It makes various settings.
    • BUILD_SHAREED_LIBS ☑ (check)
    • BUILD_TESTING ☐ (uncheck)
    • CMAKE_CONFIGURATION_TYPES Debug;Release
    • CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX C:\Program Files\VTK (or C:\Program Files (x86)\VTK)
  4. Press the [Add Entry] to add the following settings.
    Name: CMAKE_DEBUG_POSTFIX
    Type: STRING
    Value: -gd
    Description:

    * Debug string to be added to the file name of the build generated files of the (last).

  5. And output the solution file by pressing the [Generate].

Build

  1. Start Visual Studio with administrative privileges VTK solution file (C: \ VTK-5.10.1 \ build \ VTK.sln) to open.
    (If you do not start with administrator privileges Visual Studio INSTALL to fail.)

    Thanks a lot for this tutorial ! I follow all the step and VTK (with Qt) installed successfully. Now I have mistakes with link problem when I try to use VTK in QT. Have you already see this problem ?

    Message are like:
    main.obj:-1: error: LNK2019: unresolved external symbol “__declspec(dllimport) public: class vtkAlgorithmOutput * __thiscall vtkAlgorithm::GetOutputPort(void)” (__imp_?GetOutputPort@vtkAlgorithm@@QAEPAVvtkAlgorithmOutput@@XZ) referenced in function main

    Hi,
    Thank you very much for the steps, I followed this and was able to build the vtk library and python bindings without any problems. But when I tested the python lib on a different machine it failed with the following error (Working with out any error on the build machine).

    I am using 64 bit python and build the lib using 64 bit version.

    Please let me know how this issue can be resolved.
